HE SENT THEM OUT
He sent them, disinherited,
Despised, unknown, dispossessed;
He sent them out as strangers
In the world, east and west.
He sent them forth to change the world,
These unimpressive peasants matched
Against the mind of Greece,
He hurled them at the iron beast of Rome.
And having set them in array against
Such odds, He saw them wrest
The world from the grips of darkness;
He watched them set the cross like fire
Upon a thousand hills.
He saw them span the years,
Their names like stars
Burned in the history of man.
