Isaiah 28

 

PRONOUNCEMENT OF WOE TO ISRAEL (THE NORTHERN KINGDOM)

Reasons for the Pronouncement of Woe

1. The sin of "pride" Isa 28:1, 3

2. The problem of "drunkenness" Isa 28:1,3,7-8

a) "To those who are overcome with wine" Isa 28:1

b) "They have erred through wine" Isa 28:7

3. Their error of making a "covenant with death" Isa 28:18

a) Foolish arrogance

b) Deception - thinking that they will never be defeated or perish Isa 28:14-15

4. The problem of being "scornful" rulers Isa 28:14, 22

 

Chastisement of Israel

1. "The glorious beauty is a fading flower" Isa 28:1, 4

2. "Ephraim... will be trampled underfoot" Isa 28:3

 

BLESSING ON THE REMNANT

1. "Remnant" identified and distinguished from the mainstream of Israel Isa 28:5

a) The Lord will be their "crown of glory and a diadem of beauty" for the remnant Isa 28:5

b) He will be "a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgement (rulers)" Isa 28:6

c) He will be that special source of "strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate" Isa 28:6

 

REDEMPTION OF ISRAEL

1. God will have to teach Israel all over again "precept upon precept... line upon line..." Isa 28:10-13

2. So-called "covenant with death" will be annulled Isa 28:18-19

3. Restoration to take place after destruction of that which is bad and sinful Isa 28:18-22

 

APPEAL TO RETURN TO GOD

1. God gives to man "natural" knowledge to till the ground    Isa 28:23-29

2. Challenge to seek God for His Wise counsel     Isa 28:26, 29

(THE SOUTHERN KINGDOM)

 

Different Names for Jerusalem

 

1. Zion (literally, an area in Jerusalem)

a) Also called "the city of David" (2 Sam 5:6-9; 2 Chron 5:2; 1 Kings 8:1)

b) Used poetically in the Psalms (Ps 9:11; 48:2; 87:5; 102:16,21; 137, etc)

c) Used in Isaiah - called "Mount Zion" Isa 29:8

 

2. Ariel

a) Lion of God

b) Altar/Hearth of God

 

External religion of Jerusalem

a) "Feasts" Isa 29:1

b) The people "draw near to God" (physically) and they give worship "and honour Me with their lips" Isa 29:13

c) They observe the commandments of men (rather than heed the word of God) Isa 29:13

 

Woes Pronounced on Jerusalem

1. "I will distress Ariel..." Isa 29:2

    With "heaviness and sorrow" Isa 29:2

2. "I will encamp against you all around, I will lay siege against you" Isa 29:3

3. "You shall be brought down, you shall speak out of the ground" Isa 29:4

4. "Multitude of foes shall be like fine dust..." Isa 29:5, 7-8

5. "You will be punished by the Lord" Isa 29:6

6. "The Lord has poured out on you the spirit of a deep sleep"    Isa 29:10

7. The people will become Biblically illiterate Isa 29:11-12

8. "The wisdom of their wise men shall perish..." Isa 29:14
