A SONG IN THE NIGHT (Isaiah 26)

(Major Thoughts)

 

God with reference to Israel

1. "God will appoint salvation for walls and bulwarks" Isa 26:1

2. "God will keep in perfect peace" - whose minds are stayed on Him Isa 26:3

3. "God will establish peace" Isa 26:12

4. "You have increased the nation..." Isa 26:15

 

God with reference to the Gentile nations who oppressed Israel

1. "He brings down those who dwell on high..." Isa 26:5

2. "You have punished and destroyed them and made all their memory to perish" Isa 26:14

3. "The LORD comes out of His place to punish the inhabitants for their iniquity" Isa 26:21 (Note contrast between "peace" and "punishment")

 

Israel

1. "Trust in the Lord forever" Isa 26:4

2. "We have waited for You" Isa 26:8

a) "The desire of our soul is for Your Name, and for remembrance of You" Isa 26:8

b) "With my soul I have desired You in the night, yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early" Isa 28:9

3. "They poured out a prayer when Your chastening was upon them..." Isa 26:16

4. "Your dead shall live..." Isa 26:19

5. "Awake and sing..." Isa 26:19

 

Concerning the Wicked (Gentile Nations)

1. "Let grace be shown to the wicked, yet he will not learn righteousness

    In the land of righteousness he will deal unjustly" Isa 26:10

2. "They will not see..." Isa 26:11 (spiritual blindness)

    a) "The majesty of the Lord" Isa 26:10

    b) The Lord's Hand when it is lifted up Isa 26:11

 

Isaiah 27

1. The punishment of "Leviathian" (Mythological creature)    Isa 27:1

a) Mythological yet worshipped by Gentile nations

b) But apparently also worshipped by Israel

 

2. Prophetic Utterances Concerning Future of Israel

a) "A vineyard of red wine" Isa 27:1-2 (Cf. Isa 5)

b) Enemies will be destroyed Isa 27:4-5

c) Israel... will fill the face of the world with fruit Isa 27:6

d) Iniquity of Israel will be "covered" Isa 27:9

e) There will be a regathering of Israel, when "the great trumpet will be blown" Isa 27:12-13

f) There will be true worship of the Lord in the holy mount in Jerusalem Isa 27:13

 

3. The Discipline of Israel because of its idolatrous ways

a) Israel struck... in measure (but not fatally)... and inhabitants were removed from the land... to Assyria... Egypt Isa 27:7-8, 13

b) The stones of the altar are made like chalkstones that are beaten to the dust Isa 27:9

c) The fortified cities will be desolate Isa 27:10

d) The land of Israel is allowed to fallow for a duration    Isa 27:10-11
