Study 42
Text: Psalm
12
A REALISTIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRESENCE OF EVIL
The psalmist drew much encouragement from praying to God. Through a deeper understanding
of the Word of God, he drew fresh strength from the Lord. But deep down, he
knew that the problem of evil would never go away.
"The wicked prowl on every side,
When vileness is exalted among the sons of men."
Psalm 12:8
1.
Wickedness will always be around
The reason is obvious. As long as sin exists, the fruit of evil will be brought
forth! And the wicked will prowl on every side, seeking whom he may ensnare
and devour.
2.
Wickedness could even abound
When vileness is exalted, wicked will spread at a prolific speed. This is a
solemn fact that must be understood and accepted.
HOW
THEN DOES PRAYER HELP?
Though David accepted that evil would never go away, it does not mean that prayer
is useless. Let us look at some of the ways prayer can play significant roles.
1.
It hinders the growth of wicked activities of the unrighteous
This is a great and comforting thought in itself. If we cannot obliterate wickedness
but we can least hinder its growth, then we must continue to pray!
2.
It causes God to step in
God wants to be involved. However, He wants us to pray and invite Him to step
in and get involved. He will not push His way in. When we pray, He will say,
"I will arise." Let us therefore be encouraged to pray with great
faith and fervour.
3.
God may take special action against the proud and the vile
It is God's prerogative to choose when He will rise up against the wicked! Who
knows how God will respond to pray and deal a death blow to the wicked and stop
them cold?
4.
Prayer helps us to trust in the Lord at a deeper level
Many people give up praying because they become wearied and word out. But if
we persevere and pray on, the Lord could open up our eyes to appreciate what
He has promised. Prayer enables us to know His word better. We grow stronger
in faith and spirit as we dwell on His word!
WHAT
IF WE FAIL TO PRAY?
What if we do not pray at all? We will find that we will soon feel overwhelmed.
We will soon give in to despair. We could well be hurt deeply in more ways than
one. Prayerlessness is not something we can afford to contemplate!
