Racial Harmony Day 2010

Racial Harmony Day is celebrated annually on 21 July in Singapore. The event is to remember the 1964 Race Riots, which took place on 21 July 1964.

Singapore is a racially harmonious nation that has a rich diversity of culture and heritage. In schools all across the nation on that day, students are encouraged to be dressed in their traditional costumes.

Look at our beautiful and smartly dressed children in different costumes from different races and countries!

Teacher Eng Hwee was sharing with us about Racial Harmony Day.

She told us the story of the 1964 racial riots and how all of us should learn to love and care for one another no matter who we are.

This year's theme for Racial Harmony Day is "Who's your neighbour?".

The teachers put up a skit to illlustrate how we ought not to fight but care for one another as neighbours.

We also had a little FASHION RUNWAY.

These are the boys and girls dressed in Chinese traditional costumes.

Chinese costumes are uniquely different with their embroidery, butterfly knots and dragon prints.

Here are the children dressed in Indian outfits - Punjabi suits.

We also learnt the special features of costumes from - Indonesian batik, Japanese kimono, Korean hanbok.

Traditional delicacies are also featured in the celebrations.

We have different types of the Indian muruku. Roti prata was one of our favourites!

Muah chee is a chinese snack that we tried.

Ice balls/kachang is a dessert enjoyed by all races in Singapore on a hot day!

Of course, we have fruits!

Teacher Eng Hwee demonstrated to us how we eat these traditional delicacies.

Teachers manning the roti prata and ice ball stalls!

We were rather intrigued to see how the ice balls were made!

We had lots to eat! We had our snack in a buffet style.

Look at us helping ourselves to many portions of the food.

Such delight to sit with our friends and enjoy the food!

It was definitely a fun day for us!
